So why have an open bottom? Well, this allows you, the coffee consumer to wield more control over your brew. By pouring hot water slower (or faster) over the grinds, you control the extraction. If you are looking for a brewer that is fool-proof, the v60 is NOT for you. If, on the other hand, you're willing to really get to know your coffee, experiment a bit, and want to be able to coax subtle flavors out of your coffee, the v60 is great.
The v60 requires true cone filters which are different from the flat-bottom cone filters you find in grocery stores.
